Electrical appliances will occassionally contain faults that have slipped through the product testing process unnoticed.  These products are recalled by the manufacturers once the faults have come to light.  There have been instances where products that were subject to a recall notice have caused deaths, severe injury, and damage to property.  According to the Electrical Safety Council (ESC), the majority of recalls in 2012 for household appliances were because the items were at risk of catching fire or causing electrocution.

Earlier last year, a fire in a house in Dorset was caused by a faulty dishwasher that was from a batch that had been recalled by the manufacturers because of a known fire fault.  The owners of the house, however, were unaware of the product recall notice and had therefore not returned their appliance.
