20.8.17 Essex fire: Flames engulf Basildon packaging warehouse

The huge fire and a series of explosions tore through the packing warehouse in Essex.

The blaze, near the Quays pub, also threatened to spread to a neighbouring industrial unit.

Fifteen fire engines and a number of specialist appliances were sent to the scene of the large fire at the packaging and distribution warehouse in Festival Way, Basildon.

At its height, about 100 fire fighters tackled the blaze at the building.

Residents reported hearing two "massive explosions" and seeing "plumes of thick smoke".

A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service stated that they worked "extremely hard in tough conditions" to bring the blaze under control.

Police closed the A127 in both directions, Westbound at Mayflower and Eastbound at the A176.

Essex Fire and Rescue said it would use contractors Extreme Rescue, which has specialist equipment and mechanical diggers, to help turn over the collapsed roof and smouldering materials to expose pockets of fire to extinguish them fully.

No casualties were reported.

A fire investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
