17.6.17 Man dies in flat fire

A man has died in a house fire in Southampton.

Crews were called to the mid-terrace property which was split into two flats, on Winchester Road, Southampton.

A woman was woken up by embers falling into her bedroom, from the ceiling. She managed to escape from the building.

When fire fighters arrived they discovered a severe fire was located in the first floor flat. They found and rescued a man. The 61 year old was taken to hospital, but he later died. Police have informed his family.

The woman from the ground floor was also taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

An investigation will take place to determine the cause of the fire.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said all other residents of the property were accounted for.

They added: "Every fire is a reminder of the importance of home fire safety and the importance of fitting and maintaining smoke alarms and ensuring your escape routes are clear."
