10.7.17 More than 50 fire fighters tackle blaze near Hythe Pier


The devastating fire which tore through the garage bought “chaos” to a Hampshire town.

The building beside Hythe Pier in Hampshire caught fire in the early hours of the morning.

The owners of the car garage beside the historic Hythe Pier say their business has been totally destroyed by fire.  Plumes of thick black smoke could be seen across the Hampshire town as more than 50 fire fighters battled the flames, fire fighters from across Hampshire and Dorset were deployed to the business in Hythe.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed the garage in Prospect Place, near the pier, caught fire shortly before 6am, with crews rushing to the scene to battle the flames.

The fire was alarmingly close to the historic Hythe Pier and its railway, believed to be the oldest of its kind in the world.

The fire service advised the Daily Echo that it would be investigating the cause of the fire.

The Hythe Ferry, which connects villagers with Southampton, was forced to shut for over an hour as fire fighters continued to damp down the blaze.

No one was injured in the fire.
