3.4.17 Fire breaks out at Lancaster city-centre printers

Nearly 50 fire fighters tackled a large blaze in a block of city-centre shops.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service believe the fire started on the first floor of a printer shop on Mary Street in Lancaster at about 12:40.

A Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson stated: A fire on the first floor resulted in the evacuation of people from the row of shops and a fire fighting response of eight fire engines and crews, an Aerial Ladder Platform and crew from Morecambe and Command Support Unit from Blackburn.

Another spokesman said there were no reports of injuries.  He said neighbouring buildings needed to be evacuated, however, and there was "significant damage" to the roof and the first floor of the terraced block of shops.

The fire service said an investigation was under way but an initial report suggests it was "electrical in origin and involved a machine".

The one way system at Dalton Square was temporarily closed.
