10.2.17 Fire fighters rescued three from first floor window of home in Southampton


Fire crews from across the city were called to a building in Shirley, Southampton over reports of a blaze in the early hours of the morning.

Fire fighters using a 10.5-metre ladder rescued three people from a first floor window in the incident in Howard Road.

In total 30 fire fighters were at the scene.  Appliances from St Mary's, Redbridge, Hightown, Eastleigh and Totton were in attendance.

There were no injuries and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

A police spokesperson said: "No one was injured in the fire which ended at around 5am.   Everyone was evacuated from all floors of the building."

Redbridge Fire Station watch manager Rob Jenks said: "We were called at 3.40am to reports of a house fire in a building converted into flats and rescued three people via a ladder.

"There were eight people in the building in total including a small child who were placed in the care of the ambulance service, but did not need to go to hospital.

"The six flats were all evacuated on the ground, first and second floor. The crews worked hard to contain the fire, and an investigation is ongoing with the police to establish the cause.
