1.10.2016 Highbridge caravan fire: Shocking images show millions worth of damage in scenes 'like a war zone'

19-10-2016

Fire fighters from across Bristol and Somerset spent the night dealing with a huge fire at the caravan centre which caused a series of explosions.

More than £1million worth of damage was caused after the fire ripped through the caravan dealership.

The blaze broke out at Highbridge Caravan Centre in Highbridge just after 1am on Saturday October 1st and took fire fighters several hours to bring it under control.  It spread quickly as the tightly-packed tourist units caught light and gas cylinders exploded.  It is not yet known what caused the fire.

Residents across Highbridge and Burnham were woken by the sound of the explosions – with more than 60 calls from worried members of the public about the explosions and the fire, which was lighting up the night sky.

More back-up crews arrived from Taunton, Winscombe and Bedminster in Bristol, with another two aerial appliances from Weston-super-Mare and Yeovil, which arrived shortly afterwards.

Fire fighters rushed to move the caravans not yet on fire out of the way, to create a natural fire break, and the blaze was broken into sections with different crews tackling the fire from different angles.

Around 160 caravans were destroyed in the fire which witnesses have described as being "like a war zone".

A spokesman from Avon and Somerset police said: "We're currently investigating the fire at Highbridge Caravans alongside colleagues from the Fire and Rescue Service.  Our Crime Scene Investigation team attended the location and is working alongside investigators from the fire service.  It is too early for us to comment on the cause of the fire and we are keeping an open mind at this stage."

Philip Davies, director of Highbridge Caravans, praised the quick-thinking actions of a security guard who raised the alarm.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known but it is originally through to have started in a shed or fence on the perimeter of the 11-acre site.
