21.7.2016. New Prime Minister Theresa May has made wholesale changes to her cabinet and as part of the reshuffle she has appointed Brandon Lewis as fire minister.

Mr Lewis has replaced Mike Penning as Minister of State at the Home Office for police and fire and he will report to new home secretary Amber Rudd.  This is the second time that Mr Lewis has taken over as fire minister having previous held the position in the Department for Communities and Local Government from 2012-2014.  Penning has now assumed the role of minister of state for the armed forces, having only taken over as fire minister on 1 April.

Key figures in the fire sector have reacted warmly to Lewis returning as fire minister, FPA managing director Jon O’Neill said: ‘Brandon’s appointment will be seen as a welcome return by many in the industry.  We enjoyed working with Brandon in the past and he has been a keynote speaker at the Fire Sector Summit.  I wish him all the very best in his new role at the Home Office and look forward to working with him again.’

Fire Brigades Union general secretary Matt Wrack added: ‘We have recently held constructive discussions with the former Home Secretary and her officials and we hope the move to the Home Office improves government thinking on fire service issues.  We look forward to discussing the range of challenges our service faces with the new fire minister’.
