24.8.16. Decking fire in Highgate caused by barbecue

31-08-2016

Fire fighters are urging people to make sure they dispose of barbecues safely after a fire at a block of flats in Shepherds Hill, Highgate.

Part of an external decking area outside the house conversion was damaged by fire.  The building exterior also sustained minor damage.  The fire was believed to have been caused by barbecue use on a timber decking.

Nine people left the flats before the arrival of the Brigade and there were no reports of any injuries.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “It is really important that people don’t use barbecues on balconies, flat roofs or on top of tower blocks as you could be putting the lives of the residents inside the building at risk.

“Always make sure barbecues are completely cool before leaving them unattended.”

Four fire engines and 21 fire fighters and officers were called to the scene.

Fire crews from Kentish Town and Hornsey fire stations attended the scene.
