An area the size of 10 football pitches was affected in the hills around Dovestone Reservoir near Greenfield, Oldham, lighting up the night sky

Fire fighters were out in force as the huge fire tore through grassland on Saddleworth Moor.

Crews were scrambled to the scene in Greenfield on Thursday night 21.4.16 after the blaze began to take hold.  The fire could be seen for miles around in the dark, with flames reaching high into the air.  Emergency crews said that ten hectares of grassland were affected.

Residents in neighbouring boroughs could see the smoke billowing into the sky.  The fire is understood to have started in an open area, with no risk to properties.

Fire fighters were called to the Dove Stone area at about 20:45 on Thursday 21.4.16.  They battled high winds to bring the blaze under control and scaled the incident down at about 22:30.

There was no threat to wildlife or nearby properties, said a fire spokesman.  No one is believed to have been hurt.

An investigation into the cause is the blaze is under way.

People are being urged to take care to avoid starting fires on the moors.
