Man in Critical Condition after Van ‘Explosion’ in Hackney

A man is fighting for his life after being caught in a blazing inferno that engulfed his van in East London.

A man in his thirties is in a “critical condition” at an East London hospital after his van exploded in flames and set fire to a shop. Medics confirm he has sustained “serious burn injuries.”

The blaze gutted the vehicle and quickly spread into a nearby shop in Mare Street, Hackney, damaging the ground floor of the property.

The London Fire Brigade was called at around 12.10pm.

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters attended the scene and brought the blaze under control after just over an hour.

A spokesman said: "At this early stage, it is believed that the fire was caused as a result of works carried out near a generator inside a commercial property.

He added that the incident is not terrorist related.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.
