Huge Fire at Car Breakers’ Yard
Around 30 homes had to be evacuated after a large fire started at a car breakers’ yard in Woodbury, East Devon.
At least 10 fire crews were called to the scene, from which plumes of black smoke could be seen from several miles away.
Fortunately, a strong northerly wind kept most of the smoke away from the main part of the village.
Fire crews said they found part of the yard well alight when they arrived.
Group Manager John Chalk, of Devon and Somerset Fire Service said people living nearby who had not been moved from their homes had been instructed to shut doors and windows.
The B3179 at Globe Hill was closed while fire-fighting efforts were underway to run hoses from fire hydrants to the scene of the blaze on the western edge of the village.
Fire crews stayed all night to make sure a huge fire did not flare up again.
