Thornfield Green Flats Fire

09-07-2014

A block of flats is still unsafe after fire caused roof of two top-floor homes to collapse.

Police and fire teams were called to Thornfield Green shortly before 3pm on Friday after receiving a call reporting a loud explosion and a fire at a block of eight flats in Thornfield Green in Yately.

Phil Yarney, station manager at Basingstoke Fire Station, said that initially three appliances attended the scene from Rushmoor Station.

He said: "At this stage the cause of the fire is not known but I can say that the fire is not suspicious.

"We believe the fire started in one of the flats on the top floor of the building and quickly spread to the roof. Thanks to the good work of my colleagues, we were able to put out the fire before the whole building was lost.

"Around 50 percent of the roof is damaged, when we arrived there was thick black smoking emanating from the whole way across the roof."

Mr Yarney added that the investigation into the fire was currently being hampered because one of the occupants of the block of flats has legally registered ammunition for a rifle and a shotgun in his property.

The emergency services on scene reported that no one was injured in the fire, but three people were in the block of flats when the fire broke out.

Two of the top floor flats suffered massive damage to their roofs, with the ground floor flats also being extensively damaged. The remaining four flats were also smoke damaged.

One neighbour who did not wish to be named, lives in the adjacent block and was at his desk when he heard a loud explosion shatter the normal tranquillity of the close.

He said: "Almost immediately there was an acrid smell.

"I thought 'Christ, it's in the house' so I went to all the rooms and when I got to the lounge  I opened the window and this guy came billowing out of the front door of the flats opposite, with smoke everywhere, shouting call the fire brigade, which I did immediately.

"Five minutes later there were sirens all round the place and it was full of fire engines," he said.

He added: "It spread out the back and there was a dozen fire men out there tackling it, but it spread really quickly.”

Whilst the eight flats were divided by a firewall, both the block of flat where the fire started and the neighbouring block were evacuated by the firemen due to being affected by smoke.

The emergency services on scene reported that no one was injured in the fire, but three people were in the block of flats when the fire broke out.

The fire was put out at around 8:50pm the same day.  The investigation is still underway.
